OLD BRAND NEW
www.oldbrandnew.com/blog

Hello! I’m Dabito, but you can call me Dab. I was born in the heart of Chinatown, Los Angeles. I majored in Fine Arts, with a focus in printmaking and photography at UC Santa Cruz. After graduation, I moved back to Los Angeles where I worked at a litho printing company in the Arts District. We printed for now big-time artists like Chris Johanson and Shepard Fairey. After that, I worked for April Greiman at Made In Space, a graphic design consultancy. It was around that time when I started blogging about my thrifty adventures and Old Brand New was born.

I turned Old Brand New into a design studio about five years ago. The meaning behind the name is pretty straight forward—it’s all about mixing the old and making it brand new!

How to hang children’s artwork

Many of the clients we work for are keen art-loving parents with kids of their own. They are quite naturally keen to foster an appreciation of art in their young ones. And rightly so!

Decorating your children’s bedroom or playroom with pictures is great as it not only provides them with a warm and friendly atmosphere but also promotes and inspires creativity. When installing a picture hanging system for children the usual service must be tailored. There are three important factors to be considered when decorating spaces for children.

SAFETY

We do not advise installing sharp dangerous potentially life threatening artwork, in the area your children play in the most. For instance, you may love Marina Abramovic, but that doesn’t mean you should invite her to do a performance piece for your children. As intellectually stimulating as her knives and guns audience participation may be, what works in Tate Modern might not work in the nursery. Pictures (generally speaking) are safer than performance pieces. When installing pictures in children’s rooms we make sure that they are fixed to the wall securely.

EYE-LEVEL

So that the children can fully appreciate the work their height must be taken into consideration. We hang pictures for children at a lower than the usual eye level. Not too low though, like when buying then shoes, you want to leave some room for growth!

FUN

The same way a Marina Abramovic won’t work in the play room so won’t a Francis Bacon. Choose warm inviting artworks to decorate your children’s space with. Think colourful and joyous rather than dark and angsty, if the artworks you own are representational then choose the ones that depict happy and calming scenes.

Top 10 picture hanging mistakes

Hanging artwork and pictures on a wall, at least in theory, is a very quick and easy task. However, there is always a chance that something goes wrong.

To avoid making some of the mistakes on your walls, check the list below before you start the process of hanging your artwork:

  1. Don’t use nails to hold a picture frame. Choose a picture hanging system with wires and hooks, that’s strong enough to support the weight of your pieces.
  2. Don’t hang anything too small above furniture, as the pictures will be overwhelmed by its weight and scale.
  3. Don’t scatter your art collections around the house in the hope that it will look like you have more than you actually do. Keep your collection together.
  4. Don’t feel like you have to hang every piece of art that you own. Store extra pieces away and take them out periodically when you’re ready to update your wall décor.
  5. Don’t hang art on every wall in the room. You should keep at least one wall free of art to allow your eyes to rest and to give the art that is hanging the attention it deserves.
  6. Consider the reflection before you hang mirrors. You don’t want an unattractive reflection ruining your décor.
  7. Don’t try to match your artwork to your furniture or your walls. Buy pieces that complement your décor, but most importantly, buy what you really like. Furniture is often replaced over time, but the artwork is timeless.
  8. When you are moving to a new home, challenge yourself and hang your artwork in different locations. It will feel as if you have all new pieces when they’re hung in new locations.
  9. Don’t hang your artwork too high. You want to be able to enjoy it without having to look way up.
  10. Don’t hang expensive or sentimental pieces of artwork in a bathroom because the moisture from steamy showers will destroy them.

Top reasons to use picture hanging system at home

Galleries and museums are a great source of inspiration, however, we often don’t think about what goes on behind the scenes. How did their hanging system become so popular? There are many reasons that picture hanging systems have set the standard for museums and galleries worldwide. Here are the top reasons to use them in your home and office.

It is damage free

Galleries often swap pieces out or change themes. Would you take a nail and hammer to the wall holding a Van Gogh? It’s unthinkable! Picture hanging rails and rods allow art to be changed without damaging walls. One installation is all that is needed. To change works of art, simply remove the pieces from the hooks. There’s no downtime or remodelling necessary.

Adaptable based on size and weight

As you know, art comes in all shapes and sizes. The Louvre, the Smithsonian, and the Acropolis have different needs. Museums must be able to accommodate a wide range of height and weight requirements. Screws are unreliable and can send priceless pieces crashing to the ground. Artiteq rail hanging systems are affixed to the wall or ceiling with the ability to easily suspend a wide range of pieces on wires or rods.

It gives you an ability to hang countless pictures

One of the other top reasons to use a picture hanging system is that it offers the ability to hang a multitude of pictures in a limited space. Acrylic pocket displays are great for smaller pieces. Salon-style hanging has been a trend since Victorian times, and it shows no signs of becoming worn. Ceiling and wall-mounted systems are great for any picture size, the small family pictures or larger, heavier works of art.

Art hanging systems are not just for the professionals. We offer picture hanging and display systems for homes and offices as well. Get the same benefits that the top museums enjoy. Get in touch today to get started.
